Caffeine Interactions

Methylxanthines, such as caffeine and theophylline, are nonspecific adenosine-receptor antagonists and may interfere with the activity of Lexiscan. Patients should avoid consumption of any products containing methylxanthines as well as any drugs containing theophylline for at least 12 hours before Lexiscan administration.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study assessed the effects of oral caffeine (200 mg) on the Lexiscan-induced increase in myocardial blood flow (MBF) and coronary flow reserve (CFR) using positron emission tomography (PET).1,2

  • Healthy subjects (N=41) took caffeine 200 mg orally or placebo approximately 2 hours prior to Lexiscan administration1,2
  • Caffeine had no significant effect on MBF or CFR in patients receiving Lexiscan1
